5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.
1 Peter

goodness - knowledge - self control - perseverance - godliness - brotherly kindness - love
hmmm I wonder what is meant by brotherly kindness and why it's situated before love but after godliness...
I think it's because love comes when we work hard to obtain more of the other characteristics. Love means work and work can be tiring. But having all these characteristics, including love, would keep me from being ineffective and unproductive in Him.
When everybody is seeking love, they should work toward it instead.
that's great...but you haven't comment on why brotherly kindness is a step higher than godliness.
I don't think brotherly kindness is higher than godliness. I see it that's how Peter express his idea of christian should be, and not necessary there's a significant on the order of characteristics.
Now come to think about it, there could be a precedent thing going on here, one character leads to another. But that's just an idea.
